Class cues that keep every participant on pace
Instructors lose their voices for a predictable reason: cueing a room over music is shouting, sixty minutes at a time, several classes a day. Good cue writing — and putting the routine where everyone can see it — fixes most of that. Here’s the craft.
Write cues in the order the body needs them
A usable cue names the move, the count, then the quality — in that order: "Squats — eight reps — chest up." Participants act on the first two words; the refinement lands while they’re moving. Reverse the order and half the room misses the move entirely.
Keep each cue one line, one breath. If a cue needs a comma to survive, it’s two cues.
Structure the routine like a script
Write the whole class as a sequence of one-line cues — warm-up, rounds, rests, cool-down — with transitions as their own lines ("Water break — thirty seconds"). This gives you three things: a class you can repeat and refine week to week, a script a substitute instructor can run, and something you can put on screens rather than shout.
Put the routine on every screen
The back row can’t hear you over the music, and hybrid participants joining from home can’t hear you at all. Displaying the routine on every participant’s phone — with the current cue highlighted in time with the workout — means you say each cue once and the screens carry it. With live tempo control you pause between sets, slow down for form work, and speed up for the finisher, and everyone’s screen follows within a second.
That’s the SmartChant setup: a link in the class group chat or a QR code by the door, no app, no accounts, and your voice survives the week.
Timing rules of thumb
- Cue the next move during the last two reps of the current one — never at the transition itself.
- Rests get explicit counts ("shake it out — down from ten"), or they silently shrink.
- Match displayed pace to your playlist’s BPM blocks; a synced display makes interval timing honest.
- End every class with the same cool-down lines — ritual is retention.
